Ga. Black Mayors to confer in Washington tomorrow; Melba Moore sings tonight Kicking off with a free concert on The Square tonight by entertainer Melba Moore, the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors will hold its annual conference at the Fitzpatrick Hotel today through Saturday. There are 45 Georgia communities under the leadership of black mayors, and Washington's Mayor Willie Burns is the president of the Georgia Conference. The focus of the conference, he says, is to develop new ideas on building strong communities. "The conference will discuss issues that affect Georgia's communities," Mayor Burns said, "and the strategies and solutions that will result in a template for economic empowerment." The conference, Burns says, is collaborating with fellow mayors, private businesses, state government, federal government and nonprofits in an effort to move the community forward in this ever-changing environment. "We must determine what our best practices are if we are to be competitors in this global economy," Mayor Burns said. Renowned entertainer Melba Moore will be the special guest artist at the reception on The Square with gates opening at 6 p.m. tonight. "The conference is providing this entertainment only to the region with complimentary admission. Admission to the reception is by invitation only. Please plan to attend and celebrate our work to 'Balance Government for Georgia.'" Highlights planned for the conference include remarks by Robert L. Bowser, national president of the Black Mayors Conference; programs on economic development; roundtable discussions; Housing and Urban Development grant writing workshops; and a barbeque with entertainment at the Washington- Wilkes Country Club.
The Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce will be providing tours and shopping for spouses throughout the day Friday.
