Third graders get dictionaries for Noah Webster's birthday
Each student was presented with a dictionary which contained a bookplate, hand-inscribed by Kiwanian Louise Maynard, with the student's name and the date of the presentation," Kiwanis President Bill Steed said. Washington-Wilkes Primary School Principal Dr. Rosemary Caddell introduced the Kiwanians - Steed, Treasurer Mandy Whisnant, Phil Rothman, Lillie Crowe, and Carleton Norris - to the students assembled in the gym. Crowe, director of the Mary Willis Library, told the students about the life of Noah Webster and his dictionary and his "Blue Back Speller." With help from assistant principal Florence Sandifer and fellow Kiwanians, Phil Rothman presented each dictionary. "Phil was immediately recognized by the students from his character role as the Court Jester in the Washington Little Theater's production of 'The Princess and the Pea'" Steed said. Following the presentations, Dr. Caddell wasted no time in introducing the students to the dictionary's value, and asked them to look up words such as "dictionary," and "hunger" and having students read the definitions. "The primary school is very pleased that the Kiwanis Club chose to make this donation," she said. "Our children are now beginning to use resources in a meaningful way. This is an excellent addition to their collection of resources."
Steed said that he and the other Kiwanians were enriched by the exchange with the students, and would encourage the Kiwanis Club of Washington to continue in this project in the future.
