JUMP kids enjoy horses, food on 'Return to Double H ranch'

Perfect weather, horses, and s'mores by the fire made a great trip to Double H Ranch for these JUMP kids and mentors.
Wilkes County Community Partnership - Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP) got a second visit to the Double "H" Ranch in Colbert, Georgia on Saturday.

The JUMP youth, mentors, parent volunteers, and staff arrived at the Double "H" Ranch, owned by Horace Hudson (Double "H" about 11:30 a.m. After a brief "Ranch Rules" session conducted by Marcie Simpson, Wilkes County Extension Agent, the groups of youth, chaperoned by adults, went to various venues on the ranch for horseback riding, roping, horseshoe throwing, horse feeding, bull watching, double-dutch rope jumping, toasting marshmallows, and making s'mores.

"It was a beautiful fall day. The weather was perfect. Last year, we went in mid-August, and the heat index was over 110. It was sweltering!" Amethyst Wynn said.

The Double "H" Ranch was equipped with picnic tables, a great

outdoor kitchen area and grills for the hamburgers and hotdogs; soft drinks, cookies, and chips were also served.

"Mr. Hudson was doing some 'rustling' out in Wyoming; so Simpson and her partners, Sherry, Jonni, Rob, and Cat, assisted each rider and helped with other activities," Wynn said. "They were true professionals. The horses were accommodating and performed masterfully. The youth enjoyed all of the activities, especially receiving rustic horseshoe souvenir."

It was an exciting and educational adventure for the JUMP youth, she said and the journey was scenic, peaceful, and picturesque. "JUMP extends a big 'Thank you' to Horace Hudson of the Double "H" Ranch and Marcie Simpson and partners.
