Are leaders afraid to take bold steps?

TO THE EDITOR:

The news report on the Leadership Wilkes meeting, for the most part, reviews questions raised at the first meeting. From this report, it seems all that Washington needs is already provided, except for work ethics, and Project Succeed will take care of that.

Putting all our hopes for labor pool improvement on one class and two people seems to be a little excessive. But then it is not clear that all questions about this have been answered. Though it sounds like a great course idea and is needed, has such a class worked to do the whole job in other areas? Does business management see this as the only solution needed? Have they made other suggestions?

Further, if the high school's vocational programs work with place-

ment and internships have taken care of job demands for years, as seems to have been suggested, this is not enough for current times and conditions.

For a question to be raised about zoning implies that the existence of zoning restrictions are not obvious. With business and industrial growth in residential areas and with billboards coming up regularly, the question seems quite valid and deserving of an explanation. For someone, it looks like there is neither zoning nor planning. It may be that for developers it also looks like there is none; after all, this seemed to be the main message of the Georgia Power representative who spoke at the first meeting. It seems that a number of opinions, business and other, favor more zoning and planning.

Our political and other leaders just may not know what to do towards economic development and don't listen, or that they are afraid to take the bold leadership steps needed to improve the labor pool and to improve the Washington landscape.
