Mule Day took a ton of work - thanks to all TO THE EDITOR: The two-day Mule Days celebration this past week was a complete success. It not only brought a lot of fun to local folks and visitors alike, it also served to bring in more shoppers and diners into Washington. But it took a ton of work. The Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of our Chamber members who made this possible, the local vendors and musicians who filled the air with good smells and music, and to the hundred and one volunteers who did everything from take money to haul trash. City workers, led by David Van Hart, not only did days of work to get Callaway Plantation ready for Mule Day, but were on hand at all hours to set up, fix up, take down, and fix again. They are the unsung heroes of Mule Day, and have been for years. Thanks! Boy Scout Troop 34, led by Bobby Standard and Vince Price, provided on-site overnight security while camping Friday night at Callaway. The Scouts picked up about a thousand bags of trash all Saturday, and still managed to drink root beer and scope out all the girls. Led by Susan and Ed Pope Jr., those working the admission tables were David Toburen, George Brooks, Jo and Buzzy Randall, Kerry and Nancy McAvoy, and especially Patsy Wynn and Norma Hopkins. Volunteering is as much fun as you make it, isn't it, ladies? Riding herd with me on hundreds of incoming cars Saturday were Chamber Board member Jim Baston, Josh McTier, Ed Pope Jr. and Rotarian Paula Stevens, who swings a mean flag and smiles even in a cloud of dust. Thank you all. Manning the Chamber of Commerce tent were, of course, Chamber Executive Director Donna Hardy, wrapping up a 70-hour work week, and Tourism Director Ashley Turner, who dragged herself out of a sickbed to work. Taking care of a thousand details were Sue and Jim Davidson, Jessie Spradlin, and Ames Barnett, and Chamber Board member Casey Jackson helped set up on Thursday. Volunteers do a tremendous amount of work.
