Donations are needed now for July 4th fireworks

Donations are needed for Wilkes County's annual Fireworks and Independence Day Celebration - the monster fireworks show by Melrose Pyrotechnics costs $7,500, and half of that is due soon.

Contributions are needed more than ever, Tourism director Ashley Barnett said. "We need your help, everybody. The fireworks show happens solely on the donations from the great people and great businesses of Washington and Wilkes County."

Every year, Wilkes County has celebrated the Independence Day holiday with music, food, fun, and world-class Melrose Pyrotechnics fireworks display that has brought visitors from all over the state.

This year, the show is going to be big, with lots of vendors, Barnett said. "I've already contacted over 40 food and arts-and-crafts vendors to set up for the day. The celebration will be an all-day festival on Wednesday, July 4. In addition to the arts and crafts and food vendors on The Square, we're hoping for live entertainment as well for that night."

Some businesses and individuals have already contributed to the costs. "Thank you to those business who have already donated," she said. "This is such an exciting event for Washington - over 6,000 people came last year for an incredible 45- minute fireworks show that is just extraordinary! We should be very proud to host such an incredible fireworks show!"

And it's not just about an all-day party and a big fireworks display, Barnett said. Showing that Washington Wilkes knows how to throw a good patriotic celebration could have economic development impact. "This has turned out to be one of our biggest events for attracting people looking for a new home for a business, or a place to start a new business. The owner of a company could fall in love with Washington when they see how we celebrate the Fourth of July here. It's happened before."

To make a donation, checks can be made payable to Better Hometown Promotions, and mailed to Better Hometown Promotions; Attn: Firework Celebration; P.O. Box 9; Washington, Georgia 30673. For more information contact the tourism office at 706-678-5111 or tourism@washingtonwilkes.org.
