Wilkes Board of Commissioners tends to regular county business Besides the final settlement of the hospital issue, the regular monthly meeting of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners was relatively quiet and short last Thursday, May 10. A few items of routine business and the usual departmental reports were handled in short order before the commissioners moved into executive session for personnel matters. All of the commissioners including Chairman Sam Moore, Divenski Lee, Donna Hardy, John Howard, and Jerry Stover were in attendance as were County Administrator David Tyler, County Attorney Charles LeGette, and a number of visitors. Items of business handled included the following. .. Barry Forde of the Golden Harvest Food Bank requested the county's continued support of it programs in the amount of $1,500. The amount was approved as in years past. .. Jack Harvey was appointed to another term on the Payroll Development Authority. .. Tyler reported that $54,983.87 in Local Option Sales Tax and $85,001.46 in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax had been received for the month of February. .. Moore announced that the next regular meeting of the board would be on Thursday, June 14, at 2 p.m. with a work session to begin at 1:30. He also announced an all-day budget meeting planned for May 23. .. Tourism Director Ashley Barnett reported that her office had received $2,500 from the state for use by the Welcome Center. She also reported that the promotional spot on Northwest Airlines is continuing. She further reminded those in attendance of coming weekend events including MayFest, the Cruise-In on The Square, and the Young Farmers Tractor Pull. .. EMS Director Blake Thompson said that in light of those events, he was planning for a busy weekend and that his department is also preparing for several upcoming motocross events at Aonia Pass.
No action was taken following the executive session.
