Historic Macon Foundation tours Washington; enjoys 'Backroad Ramble' to historic homes
The ramble to Washington grew out of a presentation that Dr. Mark Waters had made to the group in Macon last year. "Their Director of Education, Jim Barfield, had mentioned that the group might like to make a trip to Washington. I told him that if this were to happen to call and I'd help in the planning." Waters said he and Janis Haley, curator of the Sidney Lanier Cottage in Macon where the foundation meets, planned the tour from there. "I acted as liaison arranging for homes, historical sites, and so forth, and they picked what they wanted to do and see from my initial listing of options." The visitors arrived at Mark and Emilie Waters' home on a tour bus mid-morning Saturday. "We took a quick bus tour of the city, then stopped at Betty Slaton's house on Robert Toombs. We lunched at the Fitzpatrick Hotel then went to the Robert Toombs Historical Site where Marcia Campbell conducted the tour." From there the group went to the Washington Historical Museum for a tour by Curator Stephanie Macchia and Sue Davison. Next came a tour of Wisteria Hall, the bed-and-breakfast inn of Jane and Jim Bundy. "Our guests were served coffee and/or punch and an array of desserts made by Jane Bundy, with homemade cookies provided by the Washington- Wilkes Historical Foundation president, Stephanie Macchia." The coffee and desserts were sponsored by The Washington Wilkes Historical Foundation and Washington's Director of Tourism. The group's final stop was the Mary Willis Library on Liberty Street. Library Director Lillie Crowe dressed in period attire to give the historical foundation members a memorable tour of the library.
"Our guests from Macon told me they had a wonderful time," Waters said. "And we certainly enjoyed hosting them. I hope we'll see them again."
