County should back hospital regeneration Although I have been gone from Washington for over 40 years I still read The News-Reporter every week and I remain very interested in the well-being of your area. I was saddened to read that the county commissioners have decided not to act on the request of the Hospital Authority to suppport the financing needed to bring the hospital up to date. That building is over 40 years old and, even with improvements made in the intervening years, it cannot be adequate for the present and future. I find it hard to understand the position taken by the commissioners. It appears unlikely that the county will have to do much other than back the financing. From what I have read in The News-Reporter, it seems quite likely that the hospi- tal will be able to cover the expenses without costing the county a significant amount of money. I know that Washington and Wilkes County have suffered the loss of several industries and many jobs and that many of the people there want to invite new industry into the area. I seriously doubt that an industry would consider investing in an area where the governmental leaders are so short-sighted or timid that they will not support efforts to bring such an important part of the community up to date. I imagine they would probably go to Thomson or some other place that is willing to take action to enrich their community in this manner. Wouldn't they prefer to bring their people and their money to a community that appears more bold and forward-looking than the County Commission appears to be? I hope the people of Wilkes County and the Commissioners get together to change the direction that is currently being taken on this matter.
