I'm wondering if we've just had blackberry winter. A couple of weeks ago it was very cold after being very hot. My granddaughter, who keeps up with blackberries, says the bushes have been blooming, so that must be what it was. It was nice while it lasted and I guess now we are in for a hot and dry summer. What can we do about it? Nothing!

O'Neil Adams of Tignall brought me a picture of what he says is the first Wilkes County school bus. His dad, Reuben Adams, made the wooden body that was mounted on

motorized chassis. (I guess it must have been like the old fire truck that

Rufus Rider made in the early 1930s and mounted on an A-Model chassis. This truck still exists and runs well.) Charles Blakey remembers riding on the bus when he was six years old and in the first grade in 1931. One of the drivers was Walter Thurmond, and another was Roy Blakey. They drove a route which included the Floral Hill area of the county; Lisbon (which is under the waters of Clark Hill Lake now); Metasville, and possibly Tignall, to the Danburg School. If anybody has any other information on the bus, give O'Neil a call, or call me at The News-Reporter, 706-678-2636.

As promised, Bruce and Paula Fitzgerald's Sandwich Shop on The Square will open at 11 a.m. Friday. They will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Bruce and Paula are owners of the former property of Pauline and the late Ben Bell on the Lexington Road.

The Cruise-In on The Square was just getting underway Saturday night when the storm came and gave us 1.05 inch of rain. Everybody ran for cover because the lightning was something to behold. The Memory Lane Cruisers, sponsors of the Cruise-In, had already registered 102 cars on The Square when the rains came. After the lightning stopped, people came out of their cover and the Cruisers were able to sell plenty of hamburgers, hotdogs, and desserts before calling it a night. So all was not lost. . . . I was at home with just my granddaughter's Beagle for company when the storm began. My house is surrounded by very tall oak, poplar, and hickory trees which attract lightning. We were doing pretty well until a terrific streak of lightning lit up the sky and a clap of thunder shook the foundation of the house. Indie (the Beagle) jumped in my lap and we took a chair into the hall until all was calm again. . . . I'm not too fond of storms with lots of lightning, but I'm thankful for the rain.

One Washington-Wilkes observer reports seeing Tom Duggan and son Thomas Saturday traveling in the rain in a car with the top down!

I have mentioned this before in this column, but it bears repeating because of new information. Noted true crime author Ann Rule will be at the Mary Willis Library on Friday, June 8, to sign copies of her new book, "Too Late to Say Goodbye." The book is about the murders of Dolly Hearn of Washington Wilkes and Jennifer Corbin by Barton Corbin, Jennifer's dentist husband. Ann Rule will speak at 5 p.m. and the book signing will follow. Books will be sold at that time. You can reserve one in advance with a deposit at the library.

It seems that the hummingbirds left when the weather turned cold. I thought I saw one at my empty feeder Sunday afternoon. Does anybody have any?

The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Class of 2007 will graduate during commencement exercises Friday night, May 18, in Tiger Stadium. More than 80 students will receive their diplomas from Principal Andrew Jackson who is retiring after 34 years in the field of education. He taught for two years at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School and then went to the Social Studies Department at WWCHS. When Keith Cowne was principal, Andrew served as assistant principal, and also served in this capacity for principals Bob Warren and Robert Adams. He became WWCHS principal in 2002. I have always considered him to be a very fine principal with his concern for his students being a priority. I will miss him. He says he may, or he may not, retire completely, or take a parttime job as some retirees do. He will just have to see how it goes. . . . As usual in recent years, the names of honor graduates will not be announced until tonight (Thursday) at the annual banquet. Consequently, we do not have that information in this week's paper. Next week is the week for the usual graduation supplement. . . . Six Wilkes County students will graduate from Briarwood Academy at this same time at H. Grant Field House.
