Daniel J. Newsome receives degree from Mercer University

DANIEL NEWSOME
Daniel Jumper Newsome graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the Mercer University School of Engineering with majors in Industrial Management and Economics. The commencement ceremony was held in Macon on Saturday, May 12, at 9 a.m. in the University Arena. The Honorable Griffin P. Bell, former U.S. Attorney General, delivered the commencement address. Attending the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Sparky Newsome and Molly of Washington; and Lizzie Newsome and Taylor Lindsey of Athens.

On May 11 Daniel participated in the Baccalaureate Service, also held at the University Arena. Attending were his parents and Molly. Following the service they were joined by Lizzie Newsome and enjoyed the School of Engineering's Graduation Celebration Dinner held in the Presidents Dining Room of the University Center.

While attending Mercer, Daniel received an appointment to serve as a Justice for the Mercer Judicial System. He was inducted as a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, Economics Honor Society, and served as treasurer of the Mercer Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers

IIE).

Daniel served in many capacities in Kappa Sigma fraternity, Alpha Beta Chapter, including Grand Master, Grand Procurator, Grand Master of Ceremonies and Pledge Educator. He was named Brother of the Year for 2004, and received a 2006 Scholarship-Leadership Award.

Daniel plans to continue his studies in the fall at Clemson University as he enters the doctoral program of the John E. Walker Department of Economics where he has received an assistantship.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sparky Newsome of Washington, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Smythe Newsome of Washington, and Mrs. Frank Maloney of Doraville, and the late Floy W. Jumper of Gastonia, N.C.
