Lady Bucs finish third in state track; Barnett named 1AA Coach of the Year
Coach Jimmy Barnett was named the GISA Region 1AA Coach of the Year at the region track meet held the previous week at Gatewood School in Eatonton. Only the top four finishers in each event at the region meet advanced to state competition. The Briarwood track teams had their best showing in state competition in recent years with the Lady Bucs capturing third place overall and the Bucs placing fifth overall at the meet recently at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. "It's not uncommon, but it makes our future looks good," Coach Parrish said, referring to the young age of the Lady Bucs track team. "That, plus the fact that our middle girls won their big meet makes our future in track look pretty good." The boys' track team placed first overall in the Region 1AA meet, earning Coach Barnett GISA Region 1AA Coach of the Year honors. The Lady Bucs placed second in region competition with 140 points. At the state meet, ninth grader Lizzie Keen, who captured the only state championship title for the Lady Bucs last year in the 400-meter dash with a time of 63.45, improved her time to 62.01 to take this year's title. She took first in the 400-meter dash at this year's region competition with a time of 64.08. Keen took sixth place at state in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.58. In region competition, she placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.25. After placing fourth in region competition with a jump of 28'11", she placed ninth in triple jump at state with a jump of 30'8". Keen, daughter of John and Rhonda Keen, earned 11 points for the Lady Bucs. Eighth grader Emily Henderson beat out the runner who took the Region 1AA title from her to take the state title in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:38.64. In region competition, she placed second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:57. She also placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:36.96. Henderson, daughter of Bernie and Mimi Henderson, earned 12 points for the Lady Bucs. Ninth grader Anna Goolsby took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.6. She placed first in region competition in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39. Goolsby, daughter of Barry and Cindy Goolsby, earned eight points for the Lady Bucs. The Lady Bucs relay teams took second in both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. The No. 1 team of Keen, Wilson, Carani and Goolsby placed second with a time of 54.47. Senior Olivia Lyons, daughter of Cynthia and Mark Walker of Washington and Mark and Jamey Lyons of Thomson, tied for eighth place in the high jump with a jump of 4'2". In region competition, Lyons placed fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4'6". The Bucs' speed paid off in state track competition with 27 of their 33 points earned coming from the running events. Senior Joseph Batrous, son of Joe and Vicki Batrous, formerly of Washington, finished fifth at state in the 400-meter run with a time of 54.70. He finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 39'5.5". Batrous was a member of 4x100-meter relay team, which finished third, and the 4x400 meter relay team, which finished fifth in state competition.
In Region 1AA competition, Batrous won the 400-meter run with a time of 55.06 seconds and was a member of the Bucs' region champion 4x100 relay team. He also placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 38'3.5".
