It's Homecoming week at Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School, and the school has Spirit Week activities, a parade, a bonfire, and - for the first time in years - a Homecoming dance.

Homecoming ceremonies will be held at halftime of the game with Banks County at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Tiger Stadium.

To put the student body in the proper school spirit, the 16-member Student Council decided to do Spirit Week a little differently, advisor Amy Wheatley said. "Monday was Color Day, with each grade assigned a color and the grade with the highest percentage of colors worn won a prize," she said. "We had a wonderful participation."

Tuesday was Old School Day with students wearing styles from the "good old days."

Wednesday was Rock Star/Celebrity Day, she said, when students dressed up and imitated their favorites.

Thursday is Superhero Day with students and faculty hoping to spot a Superman or Batgirl around the school.

Friday will be Blue and Gold Day, with students wearing head-to-toe Blue and Gold spirit.

The annual bonfireis set for 7:45 p.m. Thursday night at Tiger Stadium, following the Homecoming ceremony rehearsal.

There will be a homecoming parade Friday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. The parade will leave the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Gym on Lexington Avenue, travel down Robert Toombs Avenue to Downtown Washington, and then on to Tiger Stadium.

The parade theme for this year is "Remember the Tigers."

"We're hoping to see old uniforms, alumni pictures, etc., displayed or worked into float themes," Wheatley said.

To cap the Homecoming Week activities, the school will host a Homecoming dance for the first time in many years. Sponsored by the Key Club as a fundraiser, the dance is for all W-WCHS students and will be held from 9:30 p.m. until midnight.
