More than 50 girls enter Miss Wilkes Co. pageant Saturday at Pope Center

More than 50 Wilkes County girls will be rehearsing tonight for Saturday's Little Miss and Miss Wilkes County Pageants.

"I'm thrilled at the response we've received. This is going to be a fun event for the girls and for our community!" said Ashley Barnett, pageant organizer.

Rehearsal will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening for ages 0-6, and ages 7-18 will have rehearsal at 7 p.m. "We ask that only one adult accompany a child at the rehearsal," she said.

The pageant will be at The Pope Center Saturday at 11 a.m. for the Little Miss contestants and 6 p.m. for the older contestants. Admission will be $5 for adults, and $3 for children fiveand under.

The newly crowned pageant queens will make their first appearance at the Mule Day Southern Heritage Festival on October 13, and they will also take part in the opening ceremonies of Market Days on October 27, Barnett said.

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is hosting the pageant, and the board is excited to have the first event at the newly remodeled Pope Center. Chamber Executive Director Donna Hardy, said, "This is going to be one of the biggest self-esteem building tools in a long time, and for the young girls to get in front of a crowd at such a young age is a great thing."

"We'll have great entertainment during the pageant," Barnett said. "The Washington Dance Academy will be performing three dances during the pageants, and we're thrilled they'll be a part of our event. And Misty Flynn will be performing a twirling routine."

Mercer Harris will be the pageant's official still photographer, and Bradley and Katherine Barber will be the officialvideographers, Barnett said. "They will both be offering packages for parents to purchase. There will be no personal cameras or video cameras allowed during the pageant."

The pageant is the work of many hands, she said. "My mom, Connie Turner, did our wonderful website and updated it daily, and she's done so much behind the scenes. I couldn't have done any of this without her help and expertise. And Ed Franklin of Talk of the Town has worked so hard getting sponsorships and helping direct the pageant."

Also helping make the pageant possible are sponsors Washington- Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, Ames Barnett/Team Excavating Company, Talk of the Town, Griggs- Ficklen Insurance, The Fountain Spa & Salon, The Sandwich Shop, Wayne and Irene Bonertz, and Gary and Connie Turner.
