Health Dept. sets mass immunization drill October 2-4

The East Central Health District and the Wilkes County Health Department will conduct a mass immunization drill on October 2, 3, and 4.

The purpose of the drill is to test the capacity to provide mass immunizations in the event of a biological disaster. Conducting this drill throughout the district will help to test, measure, and validate the district and county plans pertaining to a pandemic influenza event and the district's response.

Families are encouraged to get vaccinated against seasonal human influenza (flu)and pneumococcal disease. Illnesses associated with these diseases can be life threatening.

Participants will be educated about Avian (bird flu)and pandemic influenza. They will receive a packet of educational materials including a copy of "Pandemic Flu Planning Checklist for Individuals and Families."

Information on the cost of these vaccines and hours of operation for the clinic may be obtained by calling the Wilkes County Health Department.
