Deadlines set at November 1 for VFW scholarship contests Local deadlines are approaching on November 1 for the VFW's student scholarship programs, which award some $2.5 million nationally in college scholarships and incentives. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary holds four contests for grades 6 through 12 for students and teachers in Wilkes County who attend public, private, and home schooling. The Patriot's Pen is an essay contest for grades 6, 7, and 8. The theme this year is "Why I am an American Patriot." The national winner receives a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The local deadline is November 1. The Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition, for students in grade 9 through 12, gives students an opportunity to write and record a broadcast script on the patriotic theme of "My Role in Honoring America's Veterans." State winners get an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. and compete for $146,000 in scholarships. First place receives a $30,000 scholarship, and past winners include Charles Kuralt, Anita Bryant, and John Ashcroft. The local deadline is November 1. The Teacher of the Year program is seeking three exceptional teachers who are recognized for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and patriotism to their students. There will be a winner in grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. There will be a national $1,000 award for each of the top teachers, and $1,000 for the winning teachers' schools. Nominations must be received by Nov. 1. With a deadline next March, the Young American Creative Patriotic Art contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12.
