Southern Fried Football
with CLAUDE CLEATS

Check out who is No. 1 in this week's Dixie Dozen. You never would have believed it before the season began!

The LSU Tigers have been knocked off their perch as No. 1 in the South and No. 1 in the nation. What a wild football season this has been. There is no indication that things are going to let up either.

Let's take a look at this week's big games involving Southern elevens.

South Florida at Rutgers - Tonight's big clash on ESPN promises to be one of the season's best. USF's rock solid defense faces Rutgers' prolific offense. Rutgers is good enough to push USF from it's No. 1 spot in the Dixie Dozen, but I don't think so. South Florida by 8.

Miami at Florida State - Remember when this game was often played for the State Championship? Well, not this year as both teams are struggling. Florida State by 6.

Virginia at Maryland - The Cavaliers have been flying under the radar so far. Few people have noticed that they are undefeated in ACC play. Maryland has been inconsistent and it does have the home field advantage. Old Claude thinks the Terps will win in an upset. Maryland by 7.

Army at Georgia Tech - The Black Knights of the Hudson arrive in Atlanta to celebrate Georgia Tech's homecoming. The Yellow Jackets will be the only team celebrating when this one is over. Tech by 14.

Central Michigan at Clemson - In another homecoming clash the Tigers are playing a team they can beat for the first time in almost a month. If the running game doesn't improve, however, the Tigers may be looking at a third consecutive defeat. Clemson by 17.

N.C. State at East Carolina - The struggling Wolfpack scheduled this one as a breather. East Carolina looks much stronger than the Pack to me. East Carolina by 6.

Auburn at LSU - Although Auburn is capable of pulling the upset, the Bayou Bengals are not likely to lose two in a row. Look for Les Miles to have his charges fired up and ready to play. LSU by 9.

Tennessee at Alabama - The third Saturday in October has been reserved for this game for many, many years. At one time it was a bigger rivalry than Alabama-Auburn. Vol head coach, Phil Fulmer, seems to have Tennessee heading in the right direction again. Even with a few injuries it appears that the Vols will take the measure of Alabama. Tennessee by 3.

Vanderbilt at South Carolina - The Gamecocks are No. 6 in the nation. Can you believe it! Steve Spurrier has done a marvelous job in Columbia and he is not going to let the Commodores from Nashville spoil things. South Carolina by 13.

Florida at Kentucky - We can't expect Kentucky to beat LSU and Florida back-to-back. Can we? This could be a real barn burner, but I think the Gators will prevail since they have had two weeks to prepare for the Wildcats. Florida by 8.
