Volunteers needed to meet Wednesday p.m. for vital Tour de Georgia planning session

Washington is gearing up for the Tour de Georgia, and volunteers are needed to meet next Wednesday afternoon for an important planning session.

"We hope to see all of you who want to be a volunteer or have already contacted me, at the next meeting set for Wednesday, Febru- ary 6," said Ashley Barnett, Chairman of the local committee. The meeting will be held at City Hall from 1 p.m. to 2:30.

"If you're interested in becoming an officialvolunteer, please contact me at the Chamber of Commerce (706-678-5111) or e-mail me at tourism@washingtonwilkes.org. We already have all of our chairs in place for the LOC, but still looking for co-chairs and volunteers."

The Washington-Wilkes Local Organizing Committee chairmen had their first officialmeeting with the Tour de Georgia staff last week and organizers are busy rounding up the many volunteers who are critically needed for the event.

"The Tour de Georgia staff will be back February 6 to meet with all the volunteers who will be on our LOC," Barnett said. "This meeting Wednesday is extremely important to our community and to our volunteers because they will be giving us more details of the Tour, what we need to be doing, events going on the day the tour is here, the route of tour, and much more."

A large group of volunteers who help prepare for the race is vital to the success of the stage Washington is hosting. "We cannot have an efficientevent if we don't have the volunteer base," Barnett said. "We ask any of you who are interested to please contact me, with all of your contact information, including and e-mail address. We will be meeting on a monthly basis, and then the month before the event, we will meet on a weekly basis. While this is a big commitment of your time and energy, it will be an exciting day for Washington when the Tour de Georgia rolls in to our community."

The event is wide-open for creative people to tackle challenges, she said. "At each meeting, everyone from our LOC will come with their ideas, events they want to have during the day, and updated information that they have been working on. It will take each person on the LOC to make this prestigious event successful in Washington."
