Reports of retirement 'greatly exaggerated'

TO THE EDITOR:

To paraphrase Mark Twain, "the reports of my retirement are greatly exaggerated."

I understand that none of the uproar in the community with my patients was caused by me and that Mr. Newsome is going to rectify the issue, but I'm still sorry for the upset to many of my patients, especially my elderly patients.

I've been here 20 years and God willing, expect to be here for another 20. That 20 years has included a lot of love and care and worry which is how it should be. For many of my patients, I feel I am a member of their family. We have laughed together and inevitably over 20 years have cried together. I feel very blessed because of all of this.

If and when I retire, you will hear it directly from me, not from some third party. And by the way, I'm not nearly old enough to retire. If people think that, it's Kermit's fault! I obviously need to have him do something with my hair!

I love you all, and again thank you for allowing me to be a part of your community for the last 21 years.
DAVID T. KIRK, M.D.
