Tragedy will be settled ASAP; other concerns under tourism TO THE EDITOR: I am writing in reference to last week's pseudo fact-filled letter concerning our "diamond in the rough" community. I would like to point out that Daniel Hargrove is a citizen of a town nationally referred to as "Disgusta" rather than Augusta. Although it was my first reaction to return in kind; unlike Daniel Hargrove, I refuse to denigrate his town as he has mine. Having lived in Augusta in the historical district, fondly called "the hill" for many years, I was just as hurt to hear Augusta described in a top-ten song as "no place to be," and in nationally distributed publications as "Disgusta." I have never known a man to be as aware of aesthetics as Daniel Hargrove. May we all say, "Bless his heart." I wonder how long he has been visiting our community. We all know everyone has worked, i.e., the Fitzpatrick, and is still working to beautify our town. I adore The Square and so did a family friend visiting from Lewisburg, West Virginia, (voted one of the nicest towns to live in the United States.) I am aware our home on East Liberty Street is an eyesore to the community and visitors. However, it was our home. I do apologize if 35 years of my husband's life and eight of mine cannot be torn down quickly enough for the community. I do recall what our home looked like when we first married. Do you? I believe it is far less an eyesore now. We are going as fast as we can, working with insurance companies to settle our tragedy and your inconvenience. I view our tragedy as your inconvenience due to the fact that my family did not even receive a casserole from anyone within the Washington city limits, much less a card. God bless the Smyrna, Aonia, and Tignall communities for their kindness. On another note, our home burned on August 15, 2007, - fivemonths ago - not six. Perhaps Hargrove's Augusta education failed him when teaching number facts. We have 24 months to settle this incident; however, we are doing all that we can as fast as we can. Any citizen so sorely inconvenienced by our tragedy is welcome to grab a mask and some gloves and come help us in our endeavors.
As far as welcome signs and the majority of Hargrove's concerns, he should address the tourism director. The majority of his observations and opinions fall under the tourism director's purview.
