Dr. David Kirk is not retiring!! When I saw the mention of it in last week's News-Reporter, I said to myself, "No way. He would have told all of his patients, and he had not told me." But when I saw the item, it was too late to stop the presses! Dr. Kirk says, in a letter to the editor and to his friends this week, "I've been here 20 years and God willing, expect to be here for another 20. I'm not nearly old enough to retire! When I retire, my patients will hear it directly from me." . . . Twenty more years will more than get me to the grave!

This week he is leaving that job and taking a job with Pharm Agra in Brevard, N.C. His parents, Albert and Marlene Willis, are delighted that he will be closer to home. Bert's dad flewout to California during the weekend to drive back cross country with him. The gym associated with his California firmoverlooks Torrey Pines Golf Course where Tiger Woods was playing in the Buick Invitational Gold Tournament (and won) Sunday. Last Wednesday Bert went to the gym to workout on his way home after work. Tiger Woods was also working out, but Bert didn't speak to him or bother him. Two men came in and asked for the famous golfer's autograph, but he ignored them. They finally left. Two more came in and the same thing happened. Bert finished his workout and had to pass Tiger Woods as he left the gym. He made eye contact with Woods and just said something like, "Go, Tiger, beat 'em up Sunday;" to which Tiger said, "Hey, thanks man. I appreciate that." Sometimes it pays to "give a man his space."

Dorla Adams gave me a copy of the middle verse of Oh Jolly Playmate. She found it on the internet. I've never heard it before, but my spouse knows it and sang it for me! It has a different tune from the others. Here it is: It was a rainy day,

She couldn't come out and play.

With a tearful eye,

She breathed a sign, And I could hear her say:

And this is where it picks up "I'm sorry Playmate, I cannot play with you." . . . I had more e-mail from Arlene in Iowa, whom I heard from about the song. Her name is Janet Bowers, and now I'm wondering if she is related to the Bowers family in Washington-Wilkes.
