Wrestlers compete in Redskin Rumble; Gilland wins class; Lovvorn takes third

The Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Tiger wrestling team competed in the 14-team individual Redskin Ramble tournament Saturday, January 26, at Social Circle High School that included 5A and 4A powers Newton County, Alcovy, Rockdale County, and Jackson County as well as strong teams from Morgan County, Social Circle, and Buford.

Tyson Gilland took first place in the 140-lb. weight class for the tournament. Gilland scored a 6-2 decision over Ben Moutltrie of Jackson , then a 4-1 decision over Corey Reid of Alcovy in the semifinals.In the finals Gilland led Zac Yost of Morgan Co. 2-0 when Yost was injured and had to default the match.

In the 119-lb. class, John Lovvorn took third place. Lovvorn scored an 11-0 decision over Jose DeRojas of Alcovy, then fell by decision to eventual champion Corey Reid of Newton County. Lovvorn then defeated Matt McKenzie of Morgan County 9-1 and C.J. Banks of Rockdale County 8-4 to take third Place.

Other Tigers winning matches in the tournament were Josh Cosby, Justin Guin, Evan Harrison, Josh McTier, Matthew Howard, and Brandon Howard.

The previous Tuesday, January 22, W-W went 1-2 against Elbert County, AA power Morgan County, and Class A ninth-ranked Athens Christian.

In the first match, the Tigers were beaten soundly by Elbert County 57-13 in one of their worst performances of the year. The only wins for W-W come from John Lovvorn, Tyson Gilland, and Evan Harrison.

In the second match, the Tigers turned in one of their better efforts in beating ninth-ranked Athens Christian 42-35. The match started at 145 lbs. with a pin by Justin Guin. Josh McTier and Axll McCarty followed with pins to give the Tigers an 18-0 lead.

Athens Christian then ran off a string of wins to lead 23-18. Wins by Ryen Scarboro and Rob Lovvorn put the Tigers back in front. John Lovvorn won a tight 2-1 decision and Josh Cosby won a 7-0 decision to give the Tigers a 36-29 lead. After a pin by Athens Christian closed the gap to 36-35, Tyson Gilland secured the win with a pin.

In the final match AA power Morgan County defeated W-W 48- 21. The Tiger wins came from Axll McCarty by pin at 160 lbs., John Lovvorn by 15-0 technical fall at 119 lbs., Josh Cosby by 16-15 decision at 130 lbs., and Tyson Gilland by 3-1 decision at 140 lbs.

Washington-Wilkes traveled to Monroe Area on Wednesday for a tri-meet with Monroe Area and Banks County but results were not available for this edition. On Friday, the Tigers will travel to Savannah for the two-day Coastal Georgia Classic.

In other wrestling, USA wrestler Ethan Ramos took first place at the Perry Invitational on Saturday. David Martin and Josh McElroy both finish second in their weight classes.
