With wins to the season end, Tigers could be tops 8A-AA
Against Morgan, W-W went in a intermission with a three-point lead but then fell apart in the third quarter scoring only nine points. Morgan was hot and continued to play well in the fourth. Even though the Tigers kept pace in the final stanza, Morgan's third quarter build-up was too much to overcome and the Bulldogs prevailed 77-70. "We played good [except for the third quarter], they just got hot." Head Coach Don Keiser said in assessing the game. Lucious Stewart led the scoring for W-W with 23 points. Jarekus Bowman came in with 17 points and Scotty Long and Dede Stewart each had 10. It has been said that in most fairly close basketball games, missed free throws could have made the difference in the game. Such was the case many times over when North Oconee came to town and then went home with a 65-63 win over the Tigers. At the line, W-W was a dismal 8-for-23, missing 15 foul shots - enough to have won the game fivetimes. "It just kills you," lamented Keiser. "We had been down by 10 at one point but battled back and took the lead twice, by one point, in the fourth quarter." As time was running out, the score was 63-63 when N. Oconee hit a shot with just two seconds to go. Lucious Stewart had one of his better scoring performances with 28 points. Bowman had 12 and Dede Stewart had nine. And then the tables turned back around on Friday, January 25, when the Tigers beat Putnam (63-49) for the second time this season. "We came out to play but still missed 10 foul shots," Keiser said. The Tigers jumped out 12-0 at the beginning of the game and led the whole way through. Bowman led the scoring with his personal season best game at 28 points, Lucious Stewart and Long each had 11 and Stewart had 11 rebounds. With region games against Oglethorpe (Jan. 29), Greene (Feb. 1), Morgan ( Feb. 5), and N. Oconee (Feb. 8) still to go, Washington- Wilkes has as good a chance as any to come out on top of the region standings. Wins in all four of those games would guarantee it.
In addition to those games, the is a rescheduled game against Lincoln County that will be played in Lincolnton this Saturday, February 2.
