Wilkes voters choose Obama, Huckabee in Super Tuesday presidential preference A strong turnout of Wilkes County voters echoed their fellow Georgians on Super Tuesday by showing a strong preference for Democratic Senator Barack Obama, with nearly equal support between Republicans Governor Mike Huckabee and Senator John McCain. In Tuesday's Presidential Preference Primary, Wilkes County Democrats came out strongly for Obama, giving him 63.72 percent of the vote county wide. New York Senator Hillary Clinton trailed with 32 percent, nearly matching her numbers statewide. On the Republican side, voters in Wilkes County were nearly split, choosing Huckabee by 36.52 percent, with McCain taking second with 35.39 percent. Governor Mitt Romney was the choice of 24 percent of Wilkes County, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul got 2.5 percent here. At least 35 voters in Wilkes County voted for candidates who were no longer candidates, although election officials pointed out that many of those votes were cast early as absentee ballots. Turnout was strong in Wilkes County, with 42.3 percent of registered voters casting their ballots Tuesday. Secretary of State Karen Handel said that she expected a turnout of 30 to 35 percent statewide, which would be the highest turnout since 1992.
