With one regular game left, Tigers could finish in first place in 8A-AA

Going into the final two games of the season, Region 8A-AA standings are still up for grabs among the six teams - well, at least the top three spots are and depending on what they do, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers could end up anywhere from first place to third place.

The Tigers were sitting on a fourgame winning streak while looking at hosting Morgan County on Tuesday night (after deadline for this issue). Then on Friday night, W-W will travel to North Oconee for the final game of the season. Morgan and N. Oconee are the only teams in the region to have beaten the Tigers so far. Two wins for W-W in those two games will put the boys on top of the region. One loss will drop them into second place. And two losses would leave them in third place and on the playoff road.

Interestingly, while the Tigers have been on their four-game winning streak, Morgan County has been on a three-game skid, having lost to N. Oconee, Greene, and Putnam. N. Oconee, though, is as hot as ever having lost only to Morgan way back on January 15. But come what may, by this time Saturday, Washington-Wilkes will know just where it stands.

Last Tuesday, January 29, the Tigers had little trouble pouncing all over Oglethorpe 77-51 but they were a little nervous about going over to Greene County on Friday night. In what turned out to be a "great game" according to Tiger Head Coach Don Keiser, W-W emerged victorious in a surprisingly low-scoring game 48-44.

It was close all the way through and Greene County led at the half 14-15.

"We got plenty of good shots but it just would not fall," Keiser said. Not much better at the end of three, the two teams were still neck-and-neck at 26-25.

Scotty Long led the W-W scoring with an even dozen points and 10 of those he scored in the fourth quarter. He also pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked fiveshots. Lucious Stewart also had a doubledouble night with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Jarekus Bowman hit 10 points.

Taking a breather from region action, the Tigers cruised to a comfortable win over the Lincoln County Red Devils on Saturday night 67-55. Keiser admitted that he didn't "think we were ever in trouble" but that it seems like Oglethorpe County and Lincoln County always seem to keep it interesting by hitting threepointers against W-W.

Stewart was the high point leader with 24 against the Devils and he also collected 12 rebounds. Bowman shot for 21 points while Quincey Bradley added nine and Deandre Stewart got seven.
