Homeownership workshop set for Saturday, May 24 at Pope Center

The next "Realizing the American Dream" Workshop will be held Saturday, May 24, from 1-5 p.m. at the Pope Center.

"We want to invite residents of close surrounding areas to attend the series of classes," said Barbara Bacon, "that can help them better understand how to become homeowners; maintain homes they may already have; improve and maintain good credit; avoid predatory scams and hear about Rural Development, HUD and DCA programs and services they may be eligible for."

This will be the fourth Homebuyer Education and "Understanding How to Improve your Credit" Workshop held at the Pope Center.

At the second workshop February 23, the City of Washington along with other co-sponsors provided important information to 25 local residents, helping them understand the home-buying process which can be confusing, especially to first-time homebuyers.

The participants were also educated on how to maintain and improve their credit. "Financial fitness is the key to wealth building," Bacon said.

"The workshop was attended by a diverse group of residents," Bacon said, "which included single mothers; single fathers; married couples and mothers and daughters, which showed family unity."

Again next Saturday, these services are being offered free to the participants. Everyone completing the workshop receives a Certificateof Completion along with workbooks and handouts of educational material for future reference.

Several more workshops will be held throughout 2008. "This educational venue is part of a program designed to help educate all residents of Washington and neighboring counties," Bacon said, "but a strong emphasis is placed on the residents who live in the area of the Southwest Washington Redevelopment Plan and who want to be on the path of homeownership and credit improvement."
