Post Office does a good deed
The Washington Farmers Market, located at the corner of Allison and Court streets, is one of six farmers markets in Georgia selected to participate in the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Farmers Market Pilot Program. The program allows for the acceptance of EBT food stamps in Georgia Farmers Markets in accordance with the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service. ƒ Florine King, a Wilkes Countian living in East Point, renewed her subscription to The News-Reporter and included a short message with it. She says, "Thank you for publishing such a wonderful paper." Thank you, Florine. We hope you are one of the few out-of-town subscribers who get The News-Reporter on time. . . . And that reminds me of the post office, which reminds me of a good deed our Washington Post Office employees did for us this week. We buy already stamped envelopes from the post officein quantities up to several thousand to use for our customers who order stamped envelopes with their return address printed on them. The post officedid not have any of the new 42-cent stamped envelopes so Barry (the postmaster) and his staff -- Mildred, Robin, and Joe (the ones that I know) -- volunteered to put the extra one-cent stamp on the envelopes by hand! We had ordered 1000 envelopes for our customer. That's a lot of work, and we thank them. ƒ Coming up soon is an ordinance banning roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, and bicycles on public sidewalks and streets in the area of The Square, Downtown area, and some other places. It's a good thing. Somebody is "bound" to get hit by a skater or bicyclist if things continue as they are. ƒ Charlie Blackmon is a junior at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and plays right field for the Yellow Jacket Baseball Team. But Charlie doesn't just "play" right field; he is a great "right fielder" and a mainstay for his team. He is the son of Myron and Ellen Blackmon and a graduate of North Gwinnett High School in Suwannee where he also played baseball. He has been nominated for Academic All- America but will not know about his acceptance until the end of this month. His dad was a Washington- Wilkes High School student in the late 1960s and early 1970s when ALL boys played ALL sports and I especially remember him in track competition. His parents are the late Betty and Tom Blackmon and his sister, Jayne Blackmon Callaway, lives at Rayle. . . . Charlie will be playing with his team in the upcoming regional competition the next two weeks, and it is likely the Yellow Jackets will be meeting the Georgia Bulldogs again. Some of the games are on CSS. You might like to watch. ƒ Restore Galore Home Design Center is now open in the old Blackmon building on The Square. It's a place you can findout about antique hardware, home decor items, custom picture framing, window treatment, and bedding -- all designed in-house by Karen Carter and Joe Barnett. Workshops and seminars will soon be available to customers. ƒ Adelle Seymour and Sherry Newsome have each seen one lone hummingbird at their feeders during the past week. ƒ I'm curious about, but have not found out about, the three little "tenant houses" at the end of Allison Street (behind the Tupper-Barnett House). They appear to be undergoing renovation. I've always liked that little area and used to walk a foot-log across the creek at the bottom of the hill with my daddy and grandpa many, many years ago. The foot-log is behind the Old Jail. ƒ Here are some more after-graduation plans for the Class of 2008.
