Meeting set Tuesday to plan for new Veterans Day observance

A new annual Washington- Wilkes Veterans Day observance is being organized, and anyone interested in honoring veterans is invited to a meeting at the W-W Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, June 17, at 7 p.m.

Businessman and relative newcomer to Washington Bob Womack is the driving force organizing the inaugural Wilkes Veterans Day Celebration planned for November 11, 2008.

"This May I was shocked when I found there was no Memorial Day program in Wilkes County," Womack said. "And I was when I found there was no annual program to honor our veterans in November either, I knew I had to step up and do something."

A student of history, Womack has seen how the men and women of Wilkes County have always answered the call to war. "From the time of Indian attacks when this was a frontier outpost, through the American Revolution when a determined band of Georgians and South Carolinians met Loyalist militia at Kettle Creek, citizens of Wilkes have answered the call," he said. "Since that time at Kettle Creek, the call has gone out many times. Through every conflictthis country has been faced with, men and women of this county left behind family, friends, jobs, businesses to serve. And yet now we do nothing to honor them."

Womack says he knows there are observances for veterans in churches, and that the VFW Post 5899 has an active education program, but there needs to be a big annual observance. "Several of us have agreed to work toward a Veterans Day celebration to be held November 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. on The Square in Washington. We'll be meeting on June 17 at 7 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce officeto discuss this program. We would like to have everyone interested in honoring our veterans to attend. For information contact Ashley Barnett at the Chamber 706-678-5111 or me, Bob Womack, at 706-566- 4910."
