Wilkes Relay for Life wraps up 2008 effort with final total of over $70,000 raised here

The Washington-Wilkes Relay for Life wrapped up its 2008 fundraising effort with a final total of $70,543.87, organizers reported this week.

Local Relay leaders met to get the final results of team fund-raisers and competitions held throughout the drive. The year's Spirit Award was won by Little River Aloha, and the Best Campsite award was taken by the Washington Church of God, with Wilkes County Seniors taking second and Springfield Baptist's site taking third place.

Winning the award for most money raised was Laugh Inn at Wills with $5,860. Second-most money raised was Church of the Mediator with $5,439.41 and third was Regions Bank with $4,220.17.

Rookie Teams of the Year were Farmers and Merchants Bank and Washington-Wilkes Primary School. Washington-Wilkes Elementary took Ruler of the School Yard award by raising $4,801, and the Church of the Year was Church of the Mediator.

Little River Aloha won the "Pack the Track" award, and Cathy Lannae, Lamont Lannae, Arnold Adams were named Grand Club Members.

Danielle Caldwell, Community Manager for the American Cancer Society, thanked all the volunteers and sponsors. "I want to tell you again how thankful I am to have worked with you all this year," she said. "You are truly a community committed to this cause, doing whatever you can to finda cure. Your hard-earned dollars will go a long way."
