Fourth of July activities need funds, vendors for all-day fun Washington is again planning a spectacular 4th of July Celebration and both donations and vendors are needed. The celebration, set for Friday July 4, from 1-10 p.m., is expected to fill The Square and the surrounding streets that night. "It's a spectacular event and rivals any big city's fireworks production," said Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley Barnett. "We're lucky to have such a great event in a town our size." A spectacular show is expensive, however. "We're currently fundraising to help pay for the costs of the fireworks show and celebration," Barnett said. "It costs $10,000 for the fireworks, so any donation is greatly appreciated. It's because of individuals and businesses that we can have the fireworks show go and continue every year." The Chamber of Commerce is now accepting vendor applications. "You can findthe application online at www.WashingtonWilkes.org, pick one up at the chamber, or we'd be glad to fax or email an application as well." To send in donations, make checks payable to Better Hometown and send to Attn: Fireworks, P.O. Box 9, Washington, GA 30673. Barnett said that the evening's big show is only the day's finale. "The annual parade at 8 a.m. is a great event to kick off the day, and while it's a littler cooler outside!"
The parade is a family-fun event, she said. It begins at 8 a. m. at Fort Washington Park, goes through town and back to the park for a short patriotic program. The parade welcomes walkers, bikes, strollers, dogs, wagons, anything but motorized vehicles. The program at the park will include the Pledge of Allegiance, reading of a part of the Declaration of Independence, prayer, and singing of the National Anthem. A wonderful way to begin the celebration of our Independence!
