Wilkes voters need to study ballot to choose right primary to vote in

Wilkes County voters need to be mindful of choosing the right primary in which to vote on July 15, said Wilkes County Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton.

"Most of the local contests are in the Democratic Primary. There are contests on the state level that will be on the ballot in the Republican Primary, but none that are Wilkes County alone," he said.

A sample ballot will be published in The News-Reporter the issue before the Primary, he said. "And I would encourage voters to look at the sample and be prepared to ask for the correct ballot at the polls. The primary is held to determine which candidates will represent the major parties on the November election ballot. That's the reason for the poll worker inquiring 'In which primary would you like to vote?'" he said.

If a voter realizes he has made a wrong choice, he can get the error corrected by a poll worker, but only before he presses the "CAST BALLOT" button. "After you press that button, there is no way to change your mind," Burton said.

After voters choose which primary to vote in, and vote, in July, they will return to the polls for the General Election in November. In that election, a Georgia voter can mix his ballot to include candidates from both parties, as well as the nonpartisan candidates.

Voters should also confirmthat their address is correct in the voter records, Burton said. "Voters should confirm their address as they go through the line at the precinct, and if the address is old or incorrect, give them your correct address. That way you're sure to be voting in the right place."
