Thomas Charping announces run for Probate Judge

CHARPING
Joe Thomas Charping, 50, who began Charping Construction Company here in 1980, has announced that he will seek the officeof Probate Judge of Wilkes County.

Charping signed his statement of intent to run with superintendent of elections Judge Jim Burton on June 10. As Probate Judge, Burton announced last year that he would retire and not seek re-election after 20 years on the bench.

Thomas Charping represents the third generation of his family in the construction business, beginning with his paternal grandfather in Elbert County. Thomas is the son of Joe Charping of Metasville and the former Ann Frazier, whose father, the late Wyatt Frazier, was a prominent Wilkes County farmer and landowner. He served 33 years as member and chairman of the Wilkes County Board of Tax Assessors.

Thomas Charping is married to the former Donna Crawford of Washington. They have one son, Christopher, 19, a 2008 graduate of Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School, and one daughter, Amanda, 22, a student at Georgia College and State University at Milledgeville. The family resides at 1507 Metasville Road, where Thomas has restored the Frazier homeplace in which his mother grew up.

The family attends Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Thomas is an active deacon. He also serves as chairman of the building and maintenance committee and the cemetery committee.

Thomas began work with his father in 1975, soon after graduation from Wilkes Academy in Washington. "My father had earned a reputation as an artisan in masonry materials and techniques, and he set a high standard for me in all phases of construction," Thomas said, "and I've become widely known for my work in restoration of historic and landmark sites." He is licensed by the State of Georgia as a residential and light commercial building contractor.

In addition to his construction business, Thomas and his father have an extensive farming operation, with 150 brood cows on the Metasville acreage and on leased hayfields"all over the county."

Charping said he welcomes the challenge of a sudden change in his life if he is elected. "I would welcome the opportunity. I've always liked a challenge, and I believe I can adjust without any problem," he said. "As I have always done, I will try not to let anyone down.

"I will try to continue the high standards set by Judge Burton. I will be accessible to all the people. I have enjoyed success here and I pledge my very best service as a way of giving something back to the people who have been so good to me."
