Taking a Licking

How could you ever forget the old Timex watch commercial!

Way back in the good old days I looked forward to that commercial to see what they were going to do with that poor watch next. They would throw it in a tank of water and then pull it out and say, "It takes a licking and comes back ticking!" Then they would throw it off a high building and pick it up and say the same thing again.

I had hoped they would run a big truck over it and I wanted to see if it would still be ticking then. Probably not! But that got me to thinking about how things are in life.

I've watched folks down through the years take many lickings and come back ticking and I'm not talking about the lickings we used to get from the old bully at school. Believe you me I took the licking because I had no choice but I surely didn't come back ticking. You would

have had to be insane. Amen!

I got on a wild horse once and he threw me so hard that I didn't come back ticking. Oh, I know they say that you are supposed to get

right back up

on the horse and show him who's boss. Well, I knew who was boss right then! He was!

But from a serious standpoint, we findin the Bible many that really took a tremendous licking and because of their faith in God they came back ticking loud and clear. Look at old Job's life. How many of us have that kind of faith in God? Oh, I know Job was human too and he questioned God at times, but he held fast and kept the faith. He took the worst licking of life and came back ticking. Amen! Even his wife said, "Curse God and die." Of course, she paid for that when she had to bear him a bunch more young'ns after that ordeal.

Job held fast to God and said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." Now, that's real faith and trust. We must have real childlike faith and trust -- one that says, "I am with you Lord for the long haul." We must trust God as the Bible says in Proverbs 3:5-6, "With all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." Glory to His sweet holy name.

Yes, if we keep the faith and really trust in Him and not lean on the arms of flesh, then we too can take a licking and come back ticking for God's glory! Can you say amen?
