Candidates qualify for nonpartisan offices on November 2008 ballot Candidates for the nonpartisan offices on the ballot for the November election began qualifying at the Wilkes County Courthouse Monday morning, and more are expected by close of qualifying at noon Friday. Wilkes County Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton said several candidates had already qualified soon after the period for qualifying began at 9 a.m. Monday. As of press time Tuesday, five have qualified for Probate Judge, two for Magistrate Judge, and one for a Board of Education seat. Candidates qualifying to run for Judge of Probate Court: Tammy Bryngelson, Rod Canterbury, Thomas Charping, Will Long, and Jerry Thornton. Qualifying for Chief Magistrate: Rosa Lee Martin (incumbent), Tommy Saggus. Qualifying for the Wilkes Co. Board of Education Chairman: Ricky Callaway (incumbent). For Board of Education, District 3: Andrew Jackson; for Board of Education District 4: Steve Albertson (incumbent). Qualifying runs through noon Friday, June 27 in the Office of the Probate Judge, Room 422 of the Wilkes County Courthouse. These nonpartisan candidates will not appear on the July 15 primary ballot, Burton said. They will be on the ballot for November 4 General Election. Offices for which candidates may qualify include: Judge of Probate Court (Jim Burton, incumbent); Chief Magistrate Judge (Rosa Lee Martin, incumbent); Chairman of Wilkes Board of Education (Ricky Callaway, incumbent); District 3 BOE (Kelly Powell, incumbent); and District 4 BOE (Steve Albertson, incumbent.)
Candidates are reminded that an announcement article of their intention to seek office will be run free of charge in The News-Reporter one time. However, information for such an article must be received by the newspaper not later than July 8. Candidates are responsible for providing the information and will not be contacted by this newspaper.
