Bring out lawn chairs, blankets for 4th of July celebration here

The annual Washington-Wilkes 4th of July observance will start early and end late, with lots of fun, food, fireworks, and friends, said Tourism Director Ashley Barnett.

Some 10,000 people are expected for the big fireworks celebration after dark, but Barnett said that the evening's big show is only the day's finale. "The annual parade at 8 a.m. is a great event to kick off the day, and while it's a litter cooler outside!"

The parade is a family-fun event, she said. "It begins at 8 a.m. at Fort Washington Park, goes through town and back to the park for a short patriotic program."

The parade welcomes walkers, bikes, strollers, dogs, wagons, anything but motorized vehicles. The program at the park will include the Pledge of Allegiance, reading of a part of the Declaration of Independence, prayer and singing of the National Anthem. "It's a wonderful way to begin the celebration of our Independence!" Barnett said. "So join us at 8 a.m. for the parade."

Starting at 1 p.m., vendors will begin to set up, and parking places in the center of The Square will be blocked off.

Music will fill the day, starting with Southern Influence Band and other live music at 1 p.m. on The Square. At 6 p.m., Soul Hollow will entertain at the Washington Farmers Market, followed by Bragg -n- Hughes & Friends on The Square at 6:30.

At 9 p.m. Miss Wilkes County, Gracen Ware, will sing the National Anthem, and at 9:15 the big Melrose Pyrotechnics fireworks show will kick off.

"We'll have lots of fun stuff," she said. "The Square will be busy all day, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets and spend your day downtown with your friends and family."

The price of gas makes celebrating the Fourth in Washington an even better idea, she said. "With gas prices so high, it's great to not have to travel for a spectacular fireworks show when it's right here in our own backyard. So, come on out for some food, fireworks, fun, and fellowship on the 4th of July!"

Barnett says the holiday is a also great chance to come early and try a new restaurant.

"I invite everybody to come out early, eat lunch on The Square. If you haven't been out to try our all our new restaurants, including Sophie's, The Sandwich Shop, and Talk of the Town's Coffee Corner & Sammich Shop, you must come try them. You can also have lunch or dinner at the Washington Jockey Club, Down Under Seafood and Steaks, or Alfred's on The Square."
