Thieves get more of a scrap than they expected

Three alleged scrap-metal thieves were arrested last Friday when a Wilkes County property owner came home and found the men on his property with a truck loaded with his scrap metal.

George Stone, of Rocker Road off Greensboro Highway, said he drove into his driveway and found three black males loading a pickup truck with hundreds of dollars of scrap metal that Stone had collected for recycling. "I asked them to unload it right now and leave, and I'd let them go," Stone said. "They wouldn't do it, and they cussed me and they threatened me, then they drove off with my stuff."

Stone said he called 911 and followed the three in his own truck. He stopped at Griffin's Store when he saw a friend, and borrowed a cell phone to keep in touch with 911 dispatcher as deputies converged on the area.

"They were really quick, and I want to thank the Wilkes County deputies, the Oglethorpe deputies, and GSP Trooper Branch for their response," Stone said. "They were right on it."

After Stone had chased the trio for several minutes, they stopped and confronted him. "I convinced them to turn around and come back," Stone said. "I tried to talk to them, but wound up having to show them my pistol before they had a change of attitude."

Stone escorted the three back to his house where deputies were waiting. Arrested and charged with criminal trespass and theft by taking were: Kenneth Wayne Rusher, 34, of Church Street in Washington; Willie Shaw, 44, of School Street in Washington; and Curtis Harris, 41, of Crawfordville.

Rusher and Shaw are held on $6,000 bond. Harris was released on $6,000 bond.

Stone said that his children were in the house next to where the alleged thieves took the scrap metal. "I gave them all the chance in the world to leave without my property, but they wouldn't. I know times are hard, but we work hard for what we have, and they've just got to know that it doesn't pay to mess with a man's property or his family."

Wilkes County Sheriff's Investigator Jimmy Harrison is investigating the case.
