Wilkes couples enjoy trip to D.C. with tour group Three couples from Washington joined others from surrounding areas for a trip to Washington, D.C., with the Ionosphere Tour Group. Frances and Norris Ware, Robbie and Curtis Tanner and Gloria and Layton Harris were among the group who enjoyed the four-day trip. The tour included a stop at Arlington National Cemetery where they visited many graves including those of the Kennedy family and were present for the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Other stops included the Washington National Cathedral, Ford Theater and the Peterson House. They toured the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian, traveled along Embassy Row, and walked among the World War II, Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorials. They enjoyed the U.S. Army Band Concert one evening which was an added feature to the tour.
Among the favorite places to dine were Union Station and at Phillips Seafood on the waterfront.
