Fire hits Metasville barn full of hay

Fire fighters from all over Wilkes County turned out to fight a stubborn hay fire last Thursday evening on the Metasville Road near the Lincoln County line. Neighbors who reported the fire said the property owner was Brian Collins, who was out of town at the time of the fire. He lost a barn half full of increasingly valuable hay and a nice tractor, a neighbor said. Dozens of fire fighters from Metasville, Tignall, Washington, Rayle, and others turned out to haul and pump the thousands of gallons of water it took to fight the fire and ensure it did not reflash in the dry, hot, and windy conditions. Fire fighters warn that the county is tinder-dry and ask that everyone take special care to prevent fires.
