Eight candidates run for Probate Judge as Wilkes nonpartisan qualifying ends
Wilkes County Supervisor of Elections Judge Jim Burton said that, as of press time, eight candidates have qualified for Probate Judge, two for Magistrate Judge, and three for a Board of Education seat. Incumbent Wilkes Board of Education District 3 member Kelly Powell has decided not to run. "I've enjoyed serving, but I need to spend more time with my family - I just have too many irons in the fire," she said. Long-time Wilkes educator and recently retired W-WCHS principal Andrew Jackson has qualified to run for the seat. Candidates qualifying to succeed the retiring Judge Burton as Judge of Probate Court include Tammy Thornton Bryngelson, Rod Canterbury, Deborah L. Davis, Thomas Charping, Will Long, Kimberly J. Rainey, Jill Rogers, and Jerry E. Thornton. The candidates qualifying for Chief Magistrate are the incumbent, Rosa Lee Martin, and Tommy Saggus. Incumbent Wilkes Co. Board of Education Chairman Ricky Callaway qualified for his position again, as did incumbent Board of Education District 4 member Steve Albertson. Jackson was the only candidate to qualify for Board of Education, District 3. These nonpartisan candidates will not appear on the July 15 primary ballot, Burton said. They will be on the ballot for November 4 General Election. Candidates for the nonpartisan offices on the ballot for the November election began qualifying at the Wilkes County Courthouse Monday morning June 23 and closed at noon Friday, June 27.
Candidates are reminded that an announcement article of their intention to seek office will be run free of charge in The News-Reporter one time. However, information for such an article must be received by the newspaper not later than July 8. Candidates are responsible for providing the information and will not be contacted by this newspaper.
