Collection of historic bottles featured at historical museum The Washington Historical Museum is presenting a collection of historic bottles in its new exhibit, "Checking Out the Past in Glass: The Collection of Bill Baab, Jr." The exhibit opened July 1 and will run through September 30. To celebrate the opening of this exhibit, said Curator Stephanie Macchia, Baab gave a lecture on his bottles and the hobby of collecting at the museum on Tuesday. The 72-year-old Augusta resident was the long-time outdoors editor for The Augusta Chronicle, and has been collecting antique bottles and antique and contemporary pottery since 1969. He has written hobbyrelated feature stories for a number of American and foreign magazines. He served as Southern Region editor for Bottles & Extras, official publication of the Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors.
In 2007, Babb and his wife, Bea, self-published a book about Augusta bottles called Augusta on Glass. Supplements featuring Augusta area dairies and their bottles, Augusta drug stores of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and "go-withs," objects such as photos, bartender's knives, and other things that "go with" bottle collections, are being developed.
